Heinz Ludwig, MD, is Professor of Internal Medicine and Haemato-Oncology and chairs the Wilhelminen Cancer Research Institute at the Department of Medicine I, Centre for Oncology and Haematology, Wilhelminenspital, Vienna, Austria. Areas of specific research and interests: Professor Ludwig’s research interests span the field of therapeutics in haematology and medical oncology. His research focuses on the biological and clinical aspects of multiple myeloma (MM), as well as on the analysis of factors associated with anaemia and the treatment of anaemia in cancer patients.

In the early days of his research activities, he was able to show a significant activity of erythropoietin in treating anemia in myeloma (NEJM 1990). Professor Ludwig serves as peer reviewer of several international journals and has published a large number of scientific articles. He is a strong supporter of patient’s interests and patient’s rights.

Wolfgang Wein, Managing Director of Merck Austria, has more than 25 years of pharmaceutical

experience. After studying medicine and philosophy and receiving post-graduate training at the Vienna University of Economics and Business Administration, he gained experience in various areas of the pharmaceutical industry as well as in countries such as England, Japan and Germany.

From 2005, as Executive Vice President Oncology, he led Merck‘s global oncology business in Darmstadt. From 2005–2011 he was a member of the Executive Board of Merck-Pharma. Since 2013 he has headed the Western Europe region.

Prof. Christoph C. Zielinski, M.D.

Professor Zielinski is Director of the Clinical Division of Oncology and Chairman of the Department of Medicine I at Medical University Vienna, Austria. He also serves as Director of the Comprehensive Cancer Center at Medical University Vienna and the General Hospital in Vienna, Austria, and is President of the Central European Cooperative Oncology Group.

Professor Zielinski completed his medical training at the University Hospital Vienna and began his career with a position as a research fellow at the Cancer Research Center at Tufts University, Boston, USA. His recent clinical research activities cover a wide range of cancer therapies, with particular focus on clinical trials, breast and lung cancer research and treatment and development of targeted drugs. He has published env. 530 original papers and reviews in peer-review journals and many books including the “State of Oncology 2013” published together with Peter Boyle et al. by IPRI.

Prof. Zielinski is Editor in Chief of the Open-Access Internet Journal “ESMO Open – Cancer Horizons”.

In 2013, Professor Zielinski received a “Dr. h.c.” degree from Titu Maiorescu University in Bucharest.

Professor Zielinski is a member of the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) where he serves in the Executive Board and as Chair of the Fellowships and Awards Committee. He was Local Officer of the ESMO Annual Meeting 2012 and the ECC Meeting 2015. Prof. Zielinski is also member of he American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) and the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR).
